The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) serves the Milwaukee area with more than 350 buses dispatched from two garages. In 2023, MCTS upgraded their legacy fare system to a more modern electronic system, with one objective being to reduce the amount of cash used by riders.
In 2024, MCTS and PIM joined forces, with MCTS contracting PIM to provide Taurus 5 fareboxes, looking for a simpler alternative to the electronic validating farebox. This collaboration is a testament to MCTS’s commitment to providing a more cost-effective, secure way to handle cash and PIM’s dedication to meeting their needs.
MCTS’ procurement process included a comprehensive design process to ensure the farebox met the needs and expectations of customers, operators and service personnel. PIM worked closely with the MCTS team over several weeks to develop and test variations on the standard farebox elements, including testing optional customer-activated fare release buttons, operator-activated buttons and the traditional release lever (ultimately selected). PIM also redesigned the cash box to ensure proper emptying of mixed bills and coins. The new design had the added benefit of easier insertion of the cashbox into the vault receiver – an improvement for service personnel.
PIM also redesigned the mobile vault for the five vault installations to better align with MCTS’s revenue service process.
These design improvements extended the project’s design phase. With a firm deadline of December 31, 2024—after which MCTS would no longer be able to use the legacy fareboxes—PIM worked diligently with MCTS staff to manage the production and installation process. This included expanding the number of fareboxes to almost 400, along with additional spare cashboxes.
