Next Generation Fare Collection
In 2019, the City of Guelph awarded Payment in Motion a contract to design and implement a next-generation account-based fare collection system across its 91 conventional and mobility transit buses. With an eye toward flexibility and future growth, PIM delivered a fully integrated, contactless solution tailored to Guelph’s operational needs.
The system has introduced a wide range of modern fare media, including reloadable and disposable smart cards, mobile ticketing, and low-cost printed QR codes, while still accepting coins and bills for those who prefer cash payments. This variety of options ensures that riders can choose the most convenient method for them, enhancing their overall experience.
A standout feature is the seamless integration of University of Guelph student ID cards. The university manages these HID I-Class cards, but the fare system automatically authenticates the cards. PIM designed the solution to ensure real-time synchronization of authorized student IDs with Guelph Transit’s backend, minimizing administrative work while maintaining complete security.

Beyond individual users, the system empowers corporate and institutional partners. PIM has developed a Corporate Portal, allowing organizations with transit agreements to issue, reload, and manage fare cards for their employees or clients. This support for partners enhances their experience and strengthens the system’s role in the community.
The system includes two dedicated mobile applications:
- One for riders, enabling them to purchase, store, and manage digital fare products, check balances, and plan trips.
- Another for taxi operators, allowing them to collect payment when providing transit service to eligible riders (such as in paratransit programs).
To ensure reliability and efficiency, PIM hosts the platform in a Microsoft Azure data center in Canada, handling all backend management and updates. This robust hosting solution provides Guelph Transit with the assurance of a reliable and efficient system, enhancing their confidence in the new fare collection system.
